Who are we?
Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the children of God. 1John 3:1(NKJV)
- We are a family oriented assembly and we preach and teach the Gospel of the grace of God and are committed to explaining, teaching, and applying the eternal truths of God’s Word to children, teens, adults, and families.
- We are a Gospel focussed assembly looking to reach out with the “Good News” of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to our community, country, and the world.
Who Comes to UCC?
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16(NKJV)
- We have a good mix of young and old folk, with a fair number of young families with children.
- Our church is multicultural with people from different countries.
- Take the time to look over the information below or the links mentioned on our Web page and you will know more about us, what we believe and how we function.
How do we meet?
- We have three main services each Sunday; a worship and communion service (Breaking of Bread), a Family Bible Hour with songs and preaching/teaching, and an evening service which is directed more towards fellowship and Bible study.Visitors are very welcome.
- The communion service is the place where the most difference from other churches will be noticed. Apart from an initial welcome from the day’s chairman and a devotional thought from one of the men, the meeting is essentially unstructured, with the men as they are led by the Holy Spirit contributing songs of worship and prayers, and also bringing Bible readings, short devotional thoughts and prayers as led by the Holy Spirit.
- Any of the men of the assembly who are born again and walking with the Lord may administer the bread and cup to the church. A prayer of thanks precedes each of these, which are then passed to people who remain seated. The communion is understood to be symbolic of Christ’s sacrifice for us. The symbols themselves are usually normal bread and a non-alcoholic communion wine. We do not believe that any “grace” is imparted to the participant as he/she partakes of the symbols. We believe that any participant should be a follower of born again, for whom the symbols represent the means of their personal salvation, gives and declare Christ’s physical
incarnation, sacrificial death, resurrection & coming kingdom. - A voluntary offering or collection is taken at the end of the service, to meet the running costs associated with the Chapel, its ministries, and for missions and missionaries.
- In the course of the week, a number of Home Fellowship or Bible Study groups meet and we encourage all our regulars to belong to one of those if possible. On some weekdays there are also weekly and/or monthly meetings for prayer.
Our Distinctives
- We put into practice the truth of the priesthood of all believers, and Weekly open and unstructured worship of the Lord Jesus in the Breaking of Bread (or communion) is central to our church character.
- We believe in the teaching that God intends for men to be leaders when the church meets for corporate worship. The responsibility to teach & preach primarily rests with men. We believe that it is not Biblical for our womenfolk to be involved in teaching the whole church or the exercise of final authority. They are encouraged to teach other women and children and play a vital role in the Sunday School ministry of the church. Each person in the assembly has special gifting from the Spirit of God for the carrying out of a ministry that is peculiar to them and for the common good. Any of the men may lead the church in worship at the communion.
- Weekly open and unstructured worship of the Lord Jesus in the Breaking of Bread (or communion) is central to our church character.
- In line with our emphasis on the significance and the saintliness of each individual believer, and simple, personal faith and belief for salvation and ministry, we have a very simple building and worship environment. We do not revere what other churches may call icons, or have “churchy” decor. Hence the simplicity of the building we call “The Chapel”.
- The church has a method of administration that is different to that of most other Protestant churches. Let’s look at that issue specifically.
How are we administered?
“Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.” 1 Peter 5:2-3 (NKJV)
- Final responsibility in the assembly is not vested in any one person, but is the role of a group of men we call elders.
- We believe that it is not appropriate for women to belong to this group since elders must teach and take authority, both being ministries that are stated by the Bible not to be a part of a woman’s role in the church (see the Bible – 1 Timothy 2:12).
- Each elder is part of that group by virtue of specific invitation by the other elders, who are recognised in the church as being spiritual men. This is not an elected group. The tenure of each elder is for as long as he is able, and has the confidence of the assembly, and as long as he remains Biblical and spiritual. With the eldership is a group of deacons to look after the day-to-day matters of the running of the church and the church property.
What do we believe?
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16 (NKJV)
Membership
The Unley Christian Church has no formal membership as such. All who profess to love our Lord Jesus Christ and who want to fellowship with the Unley Chapel people are welcomed, provided they do not have unresolved issues of public sin or another church’s discipline.
We are committed to believers being baptized, by immersion in water. We ask that all who choose to fellowship regularly at “The Chapel” also accept the authority of the elders as mentioned above. It is hoped that all who choose to fellowship amongst the believers at “The Chapel” will ‘own’ the activities of the church and support them however they can.
